The Ham's Wide World - 1969 version

In 1959, TV producer Dave Bell, W6AQ, hit a media home run, getting 30 minutes of prime-time exposure for ham radio with the ORIGINAL "Ham's Wide World". That video was the featured program for the October 2015 Fulton ARC meeting.  In 1969, Dave produced revision two of "The Ham's Wide World" featuring celebrity hams Arthur Godfrey, Bill Leonard and Barry Goldwater.  Both programs are preserved in the ARRL Film Collection.  Join us for a screening of the 1969 version of "The Ham's Wide World".

RF Safety

The next meeting of the Fulton Amateur Radio Club will be on Wednesday, February 22, at 7 pm in the lower level of the Oswego County Office Building, across from Mimi's Restaurant, Route 481 North, Fulton, NY. The FCC is required  to evaluate the effect of emissions from FCC-regulated transmitters on the quality of the human environment.   Accordingly, Amateur Radio operators must take precautions to assure that Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE) limits established by the FCC are not exceeded.  Join us for a program reviewing Radio Frequency (RF) Safety.

Nicola Tesla and The War of The Currents

Nicola Tesla was truly a Renaissance man.  He was a Serbian-American inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, physicist, showman, and futurist who is best known for his contributions to the design of the modern alternating current electricity generation and supply system.  Join us for a program that merely skims the surface of Nicola Tesla's accomplishments.

Special Event Station W2L

On August 21-22 Derek, K2KU, activated the Oswego Lighthouse during the annual Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend event.  Using the callsign W2L and working with the volunteers and curators of the H. Lee White Maritime Museum, Derek generated the first transmissions in decades from the historic Oswego Lighthouse.  Please join us at the meeting for the story behind Special Event Station W2L.

Pictorial Tour of Ham Shacks

In the early days amateur radio operators often constructed their noisy, smelly, and often dangerous spark gap stations in "shacks" separate from their living quarters.  The term "Ham Shack" has been maintained to this day.  Many variables (personal taste, type and quantity of equipment, available space, budget) determine the setup of a modern ham shack.

HF Operation

The number of Amateur Radio operators in the United States reaches a new all-time high with each passing day.  This growth has been seen locally, as well. There are currently 76 "active" licensees in zip code 13126, and 63 in 13069.  Many are new hams and recent upgrades, and many find their first foray on the High Frequency (HF) bands to be somewhat daunting.  As always, mentors are valued and available.  Our program this month will be an Introduction to HF Operation.

Ham Radio Trivia - Round II

“Trivia” is everywhere. Since the introduction of “Trivial Pursuit” in 1982, many different flavors of trivia “contests” have emerged including Trivia nights at taverns and in private homes, Trivia fundraising events, on-line sites and even Apps for mobile devices. Not to be left behind, Fulton ARC will have its second “Ham Radio Trivia” quiz at its next meeting on Wednesday, March 23 at 7 pm. Fabulous prizes will be awarded to the winner(s). Join us!

The "Bash Books"

The FCC's published amateur radio question pool has been a fixture for decades now, along with the volunteer Examiners who administer the tests. Prior to 1980, amateur radio tests were given by the FCC at designated times in designated locations. There was a "syllabus" of topics for each license class but the actual questions were not published. Why the change?  A ham named Richard Bash was disappointed in the failure rate experienced by examinees and decided to do something about it. Join us for a brief program on the "Bash Books".

2015 K1N Navassa Island DXpedition

Many amateurs pursue DX awards based on how many Countries (or "Entities") they contact.  The rules governing what constitutes an "Entity" are complex.  One wouldn't expect that one of the rarest "Entities" would be right under our noses, in the Caribbean.  Navassa Island (KP1) is an unoccupied US Territory. It is VERY hard to get permission to go there; its last activation was in 1993, placing it very high on many DXers' "Most Wanted" list.  It is also VERY hard to access. Join us for a program on the 2015 K1N Navassa Island DXpedition.
